January 21, 2025Mobilizing Museum Minerals – Virtual Launch Event

The CSC is looking forward to the virtual launch event for Mobilizing Museum Minerals, a special, double issue of Museum & Society Journal co-edited by CSC Post-Doctoral Fellow Camille-Mary Sharp.
Tuesday, January 28, 2025 – 11:00 ET / 16:00 UK / 17:00 Central Europe (1.5 hours)
(register for this virtual event on zoom)
Please join us for the launch of the November 2024 Special Issue of Museum & Society: Mobilizing Museum Minerals! This double issue of 17 papers and an Introduction editorial by the guest editors (Armstrong & Sharp) critically reconsiders mineralogical and geological collections in museums.
The launch event will feature short talks from five authors to understand the emergence of critical approaches to earth sciences in museums. How have researchers and museum workers unearthed the connections between geology and extractivism? What are the material conditions for doing this work? How are these connections documented, and how do museums share these stories with their publics?
Part of this launch event will provide an opportunity to connect with other scholars and practitioners who are interested in how critical topics like empire, extractivism, time and labour, environment, and geo/ecology manifest in heritage contexts.
We look forward to growing a community of critical mineral scholars through this event and special issue and seeing mineralogical and geological collections increasingly mobilized by the museum sector to grapple with colonial pasts, unequal presents, and climate-oriented futures.
This event is supported by the Centre for Sustainable Curating at Western University.
